Read Bermuda – Day 6.

Day seven was our last full day in Bermuda. We debated taking a taxi to Elbow Beach. We had been to Elbow Beach in the past, prior to having having kids, but we ended up deciding to stay closer to our guest house rental and walk down to Horseshoe Bay. Horseshoe Bay Beach is more protected and was in walking distance.

The walk downhill took about 10-15 minutes and was very easy. Traffic drives slow on Scenic Heights Pass since it is relatively narrow residential street and there are many speed bumps to calm traffic.

Year ago Horseshoe Bay used to have a shuttle bus that you could pay something like $2 for a ride up or down the hill from South Road to the beach. The shuttle is no more and there is now a wooden boardwalk with steps to allow you to easily get to the beach.

We arrived at Horseshoe Bay around 9:45 am and found a nice spot to lay out our blanket and install our umbrella near the protected Horseshoe Bay Cove. This area can get very busy as the day goes on so it’s best to get here early. The water is shallow, calm, and clear; great for little kids.

We brought lunch with us and stayed at Horseshoe Bay Beach for about five hours, enjoying the cocktails we brought with us and purchasing a Rum Swizzle to share from the Rum Bum Beach Bar after our supply ran out.

There are plenty of areas to explore for the kids and fish to see. Although past storms have weakened the cliffs and signs say to not climb, they are ignored by most visitors.

We took a short taxi ride back up to our guest house rental. Climbing the hill would be a bit much for the kids after a tiring day at the beach. The approximately $8 taxi ride was well worth the price.

When we got back to the house we took it easy and swam in the pool before cooking dinner. Our youngest son was obsessed with the Children’s Room at the nearby Fairmont Southampton and kept begging to go back one last time. Plus we needed to mail a postcard, so he and I walked down the Railway Trail to the Fairmont’s Waterlot Inn shuttle bus stop. Then we took the free shuttle up the hill to the hotel.

We purchased post card stamps from the hotel concierge and placed them in the letter box before heading downstairs to the playroom. I really think the playroom was one of the highlights of the trip for him so I’m glad we got to check it out one last time. When he had finally had his fill of the playroom we took the hotel’s shuttle back down the hill and walked home along the Railway Trail. (The playroom is intended for hotel guests only, but I doubt many non-hotel guests ventured there other than us).
